Summary

Ping is an optional keepalive either party may use: a ping request with no params that the receiver must answer promptly with an empty result. On timeout the sender may treat the connection as stale, terminate it, or attempt reconnection. Implementations should ping periodically at a configurable frequency while avoiding excessive pinging.

Key findings

  • Ping is "an optional ping mechanism" usable by either party: {"jsonrpc":"2.0","id":"123","method":"ping"} with no params.
  • "The receiver MUST respond promptly with an empty response" ("result": {}).
  • On timeout the sender "MAY: Consider the connection stale; Terminate the connection; Attempt reconnection."
  • "Implementations SHOULD periodically issue pings… frequency SHOULD be configurable… Excessive pinging SHOULD be avoided."

Pros / strengths

  • Trivial to implement in both directions: no params to build, empty-object response, no capability negotiation needed.
  • Explicitly usable pre-initialization (the lifecycle page allows pings before the initialize response), so it doubles as a cheap liveness check during connect.
  • Sensible operational guidance: configurable frequency plus an explicit warning against excessive pinging.

Cons / limitations / caveats

  • No explicit author names or publish dates appear on the page; the date above is the version stamp in the URL, per the pack's Uncertainty notes.
  • Optional and low-value for short-lived stdio clients: keepalive matters mostly for long-lived HTTP sessions, so a minimal client can defer ping-sending (but must still answer incoming pings with {}).
  • Removed in the 2026-07-28 revision (see the changelog dossier), so ping code is handshake-era-only investment.

Relevance to tai

Optional keepalive: a minimal client can implement ping-sending and must answer incoming pings with {}. Cheap to add, easy to defer except for the response path.
